Austin Coffee Houses

Where do you go around town for really good espresso? I don't mean for a specialty drink, or atmosphere, or wifi or anything else other than a place that pulls a really, really high quality shot of espresso. (Okay, it might also be cool if they can also make a really good cappuccino, but that's secondary.)

Nor does it have to be a coffee house, per se -- restaurants, hotels, whatever, all are fine.

espresso, you say?

I've finally resorted to having whole-bean Intelligentia Black Cat shipped to my abode every week.

I've done this largely out of dismay. No vote of confidence in my barista skills is intended.

In my opinion, Austin could use an espresso equivalent of The Steeping Room -- a shop where they have fresh roasts like Black Cat and Hairbender and Ecco Northern Italian available in bags full of whole-bean, and where you can also get shots or caps if that's what floats your boat. Also, it should be open 24 hours. And it should be staffed by beautiful nude women from Scandinavia who look like Tolkien elves but with round ears.

Hey... I'm just saying.

Medici and JP's Java are the only two places in town that have the equipment, expertise, and top quality beans, IMHO

Medici has some serious afficionados. I heard one of the guys talking about being in a competition somewhere.

I've been drinking Americanos for awhile now, so quality of the coffee stands out more.

He was also mentioned in an article for a trade magazine.

I like Caffè Medici quite a bit. They have good frappes.

I feel your pain, though. I'm originally from Naples (Italy), which is known nationwide as the best place to get an espresso. Needless to say, I'm a bit underwhelmed by Austin's.

Motive Inc, where I once worked, had a $10,000 espresso machine in the snack room. It made great americanos (I'm a wimp and dilute). I can't easily get in there any more (you need a security badge), though I bet a person could wait by the door till someone opened it and then piggy back their way inside.
